today’s ideas on cyborgs are strongly influenced by science fiction characters, futuristic fantasies, and their interpretations in novels or movies. some of the best known ones are Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Maria in the 1920s movie ‘Metropolis’, and more recently Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Terminator’ or the characters of the Startreck Series.

the human-factor the cyborgs in science fiction are often reduced to human traces that let us recall the human origins. a lot of times, the human traces come up in form of vulnerability.

the human dream of making the body more durabe and creating a life-form that is more controllable -machine-like- is THE theme in science fiction that imagines the future. in this century, these visions have partially become a lived reality by many as westen worlds have developped into technolog-informed cultures.
